A NEW PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE?
Recently, I was sent an email, in which a patriotic citizen and former naval cadet at Texas A & M University was lamenting the current condition of America. He wrote, "The things that cause me distress are legion. Our freedoms are systematically being chipped away and the Judeo-Christian underpinnings of our society are under constant assault. Economic, political, social and moral concerns fill the news, and our elected officials - Republican and Democrat alike - have made a series of tragic mistakes. And even though I am not a conspiracy theorist, I can't help but believe that some of these persons are resolutely dedicated to bringing this country to its knees."
The gentleman continues by admitting that he can no longer in good conscience pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. Here are his words: "our nation's flag no longer stands for the principles upon which this country was founded; those ideas and ideals that made Old Glory great."
He proposes to substitute the following Pledge: "I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all." His Pledge conspicuously omits the words "flag" and "indivisible."
One can debate all day long the wisdom of this fellow's proposals. My guess is that most patriotic Americans will not like them and will retort that the flag and the Constitution are inseparably one, as the nation is indivisible. Yet no longer being able in good faith to pledge allegiance to the flag is serious stuff. Rather than condemning this act of conscience out-of-hand, I think that we should make an effort to understand it. So what, pray tell, is going on?
Casual observations tell me this: a deep sense of alienation is infecting large portions of the body politic. Citizens are beginning to feel that there are gaping chasms of thought and culture dividing them. Many are disillusioned with and estranged from government, especially those who administer it. Reason provides no answers with which to bridge differences, because there are few, if any, commonly accepted assumptions. To shift metaphors, what were once slightly visible hairline fractures in the house we occupy have now widened. They can no longer be called "cosmetic" or "settling" cracks. They are truly "foundational" and are now threatening the structural integrity of the entire superstructure.
Mr. Barack Obama is not governing from the center. He is governing from the left. His unrestrained promotion of the welfare state; his takeover of large portions of the automobile industry; his environmental initiatives such as cap and trade; his position on amnesty for illegal aliens along with his opposition to States' verification of voter registration; his refusal to recognize any rights whatever for even a late term fetus; his judicial philosophy of "empathy"; his position on gun control; and his international posture of appeasement, weakness and indecision are guaranteed to alienate at least half the population. Two questions follow: In what sense is America "indivisible" when half its population is alienated and estranged from the other half? If the American flag stands for the United States government, then in what sense can one pledge himself to a government which has implemented Mr. Obama's "changes"? The idea of a new Pledge of Allegiance may not be too far-fetched after all.
Herbert E. Meyer, Special Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence during the Reagan Administration and Vice Chairman of the CIA's National Intelligence Council, is pictured above. He argues that the nation is in the middle of "a revolution." He writes, "During the last 30 years we Americans have been so politically divided that some of us have called this left-right, liberal-conservative split a 'culture war' or even a 'second Civil War.' These descriptions are no longer accurate. The precise, technical word for what is happening in the United States today is revolution." Indeed it is! The decisions that are being made by the Obama Administration are not business as usual. They comprise fundamental changes to the nation's operating system.
My friends, there are dark, foreboding signs on the horizon. A perfect storm is gathering. It is being propelled by cataclysmic winds and raging fires. The storm is building to a zenith of terror and rage and will burst forth in apocalyptic proportion as if spewed from the mouth of a dragon.
